"Hmph." Auron's hand played idly across Lulu's hip as he watched her eyelids droop.
She snuggled closer. "Mmm?"
Silence.
Lulu tugged his ponytail gently. "What 'hmph'?"
"You once said," Auron murmured, sliding his calloused palm up her stomach and making her shiver, "that there was nothing between us."
Despite the unspoken question, she could not resist a faint chuckle. She folded her hand over his. "Well, you know, there isn't." The toe of one foot traced his calf to demonstrate.
"That's not exactly what you meant."
"Because I thought..." She sighed out. "Anyway. This is all we have time for."

The pained beauty of the inevitability is almost too much.
And the fact that he brings forth the subject raises many sad questions.
